A historic moment for Malaysian pickleball unfolded this past weekend as the Malaysia Pickleball Association (MPA) successfully conducted its Certified Instructor Level 1 course in the Central Zone for the first time. The event, held on Saturday at SMK Sacred Heart and hosted by the Sibu Pickleball Association (SPA), marks a pivotal milestone in expanding the sport’s reach across Sarawak.
The full-day course drew 34 enthusiastic participants, including players from Kuching and Sarikei, reflecting the sport’s growing popularity across East Malaysia. With a dynamic mix of aspiring coaches, players, and educators in attendance, the event underscored a shared commitment to building a stronger pickleball community in the region.
Expert Coaching from MPA Leadership
Leading the course was none other than MPA President Farrell Choo, who brought his expertise directly to the Central Zone. Participants received hands-on training and personal guidance from the nation’s top pickleball authority.
“This programme is not only a platform to upgrade technical knowledge and coaching competency but also a strategic step toward forming a stronger coaching community in East Malaysia,” Choo emphasized during his opening remarks.
Comprehensive Certification Designed for Growth
The Level 1 certification session was meticulously structured to provide a solid foundation for future coaches and leaders in the sport. Key modules included:
- Coaching ethics and safety
- Rules of the game and match officiating
- Basic stroke and drill techniques
- Court positioning and communication
- Practical demonstration and coaching simulation
Upon successful completion, participants will be officially recognized as Level 1 Certified Instructors, equipping them to support pickleball’s development at both grassroots and school levels.

Local leaders are already looking ahead to continued growth. Bukit Assek Assemblyman Chieng Jin Ek, who attended the event, shared his appreciation for the initiative.
“We are grateful to MPA for their continuous support. Bringing this course to Sibu empowers our local players and educators to step into leadership roles within the sport,” he stated.
SPA’s ambitions remain high, with plans to further collaborate with national and state-level partners.
“SPA aims to continue working closely with national and state-level bodies to host more professional development events and tournaments in the future, establishing Sibu as a growing hub for pickleball activities in Sarawak,” Chieng added.
